PORTABLE AIRFIELD LIGHTING
![]() ![]()
Compliance:
FAA AC 150/5345, ICAO Annex 14, AC 150/5345-50B, and
AC 150/5345-53C Appendix 3 Addendum Civil Applications: The UAL, COREL, and VIS PAPI family of products have successfully completed a full and comprehensive schedule of environmental and type testing designed to meet rugged and exacting standards. These include: climatic conditions, corrosion and salt resistance, mold growth, fluid contamination, EMC, vibration, shock, reliability, and maintainability. ![]() CALKIT (Civil Airfield Lighting Kit): Developed
from the military MOSKIT (Minimum Operating Strip Lighting Kit) system
to provide customers in the civil market with a cost effective, truly
portable, primary, supplementary and emergency lighting. CALKIT is used
at all types and categories of airfields, be it a grass/dust strip or
an international Category III airfield.
Since its introduction in 1992, the Original CALKIT has been sold to a variety of customers ranging from International Airfields to smaller airfields that include both civil and military operations. The Improved CALKIT has also been sold nationwide since its introduction in October 2001. CALKIT SALES REFERENCE LIST The system is used in
many ways:
![]() ◙ For
rapid deployment in the case of failure of the main lighting system.
◙ For
remote airstrips, where main lighting is not available.
◙ To provide lighting on alternate runways or emergency landing areas. ◙ To supplement the main lighting system in the event of partial failure. ◙ As the main lighting system on an airfield with no permanent lighting. ◙ To mark temporary taxiway and maneuvering areas by day and by night. ![]() ◙ To show the limits of obstructions and areas under repair by day and by night. The CALKIT has been
redesigned and incorporates many new features:
◙ A
new drop-in charging system for the COREL allows faster loading and
unloading of the light units before and after the charging procedure.
◙ The
battery chargers have been replaced by transformers and rectifiers,
which are integral to the trailer, with charge control inside the COREL
itself.
◙ Charging
is much faster, with 95% capacity being achieved within eight hours.
◙ The CALKIT trailer now has a greater carrying capacity, even though the dimensions have been reduced. An extra four edge lights can now be added taking the total to 66 lights. ◙ A new lamp driver within the COREL allows for the addition of extra features to the light unit itself. ![]()
COREL (Combined Omni-Directional
Runway & Taxiway Edge Light):
On June 15, 2008, Intertek Testing Services approved Metalite's L-863 Portable Runway Lights for the Metalite LED COREL:The
COREL is sold as a main component of CALKIT and as an individual omni-directional runway edge light. The standard COREL providing 50
candela of omni-directional white light and is able to meet all
appropriate international standards. Other optional features of the
COREL that can be included in the unit are three light intensity,
flashing, radio control, infrared (NVG compatible), and main or
generator power. The COREL is designed to provide low life-cycle costs.
This is based on long component life, high reliability, and ease of
maintenance. The units have lenses, which are easily changed, and are
available in all aviation colors for different functions on the runway.
The UAL is a battery powered, portable,
unidirectional approach light providing 3 pre-set levels of light
intensity. UAL's are available as a manual or remote (radio) controlled
unit.
VIS PAPI (Visual Spectrum Precision Approach Path Indicator):
The PAPI is a two-lamp
unit emitting a split red/white signal,
which is recognized by pilots internationally. Each unit is fitted
with
an inclinometer (aiming device) and spirit level
making the deployment
easy, quick, and accurate.
The rugged, lightweight, battery powered, manual or radio controlled VIS PAPI emits a red and white signal at 3 pre-set levels of intensity. SLABs give up to 8 hours continuous operation at full intensity. The desired approach angle can be set between 2º to 8º and is accurate to within 1 minute of arc. Four light PAPI systems are also available.
